PROJECTS

AMA Foundation

The American Medical Association Foundation is a national project in which all Alliances throughout the United States participate. We raise money to provide the funds used to support medical schools and provide loan guarantee funds for medical and para-medical students, nursing students, interns, and residents.

Doctor's Day

Each March 30 the the nation celebrates National Doctor's Day, having been designated by a Joint Resolution of the U.S. Congress as a day to show appreciation for our nation's doctors. Each year we honor the OCMS Doctors with an activity in March, and proceeds are donated to a local charitable organization.

FMAA Aids Book Cover Project

The purpose of this state project is to promote AIDS awareness through the distribution of a Bookcover in science and/or health classes. It is distributed to the middle schools with local school board approval. Funding is provided by individuals and local businesses who underwrite this worthwhile project.

Legislation

Our Alliance keeps abreast of legislation which has a bearing on the quality of health care in our state by maintaining communications with the Medical Society and Florida Medical Association Alliance on pending legislation. Our efforts have helped to defeat unfavorable legislation.

medSOURCE +

OCMSA and the Visiting Nurses Association work together to collect unused medications for the Health Care Center for the Homeless. These supplies are donated by local physicians.

No Smoking

Since 1975 Alliance members have presented a program to local fifth graders showing them the hazards of smoking. The program was developed by the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association.

OCMSAF Healthcare Studios Scholarship Assistance Fund

This fund is a scholarship to help students who are enrolled in the accredited healthcare studies program by giving monetary assistance during time of need, thereby enabling these students to continue their education.

TB Shelter

The Health Care Center for the Homeless has created a shelter for homeless patients who have contracted tuberculosis. Our Alliance provides food to the eight-resident facility four weeks during each year.

SAVE

In honor of the AMA Alliance's STOP AMERICA'S VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE Day, OCMSA members present the HANDS ARE NOT FOR HITTING activity book to local elementary school classes and help the children make special handprint T-Shirts to take home.
